An affiliate website can be a tricky business to make good money from.

You would think that it is much easier than setting up an entire store, and you would be right, except that there are many different things you need to create in order to have a chance at succeeding in making regular sales. The bare minimum you would need to drive worthwhile traffic to your site is:

1. A website containing some good product reviews.
2. A squidoo lens review page linking to your site.
3. A main domain name (not sub domain).
4. Some niche products to promote.

Even with these things in place you will need to do some heavy SEO work to develop traffic. It is commonly acknowledged among “gurus” and internet marketers that an assumed average views to sales conversion rate is around 1%; highly targeted traffic is suggested to be around 5-10%.

This basically means that you should expect around 10 in every 1 thousand visitors to buy something – bear in mind that this is not guaranteed, just an average figure. If you are lucky enough to achieve a 1% conversion rate then you may do well if you can drive enough traffic to your site. Now the tricky part is obtaining the traffic without it costing more than you can make.

I have here one very important piece of advice – unless you are a PPC or ad words super expert, you should not try PPC advertising, many PPC newbie’s end up wasting a fortune. There are plenty of good free ways to build up steady traffic – my advertising article will cover these later on in the series of articles.

There are other paid advertising campaigns an internet marketing newbie can use effectively such as payment per thousand impressions; the key to all advertising successes is HIGHLY TARGETTED traffic. When beginning a campaign do not make the common mistake of adding many keywords for the sake of driving more traffic, this will result in too much generic traffic. What good is there in paying for 1000 non paying visitors, when you can pay for 100 who are actually interested in buying.

What you should be aiming for is a few keywords that are directly specific to the product you are promoting. If you do choose the “review site” which is the most common affiliate site, you must never try to sell the product in your review, your goal is to provide an information review focusing on both the positive (and the negative) points of the product, It would be preferable if you have tried the program yourself first

If you haven’t do not claim you have, just give an opinion based on what you know. The buyer won’t know you haven’t tried it until they have themselves, and when they do, they’ll know whether you did, this will install mistrust if you’ve lied and they will tell others about you.

are several good ways to achieve a good reputation, you can give away freebies like e-books or software, or you can offer a discount on the products to name two ways. If you don’t want to develop a bad reputation I would advise you to stay away from promoting “get rich quick” schemes as well, they nearly always end up backfiring on the affiliates reputation.

The second type of affiliate website is the info site, this can be anything from a blog about hamsters to a website about online services. With this type of site you should join companies that sell related products via the many affiliates listing site out there. I am with several that are free to join and you can find the ads on my site in the shopping/affiliates section, these are tried and trusted companies that do not charge you anything to find companies to be an affiliate for.
